Roaring Robotics to VEX Robotics World Championship

White Pine, TN – Lakeway Christian Academy’s Roaring Robotics has earned 3 invites to the 2022 VEX Robotics World Championship. The Roaring Robotics earned these invites at the Tennessee VEX Robotics Competition State Championship on March 4-5, 2022, in Brentwood, TN.

Team 16859D “Rocky” were the State Champions for the Middle School tournament and Team 16859C “Number 5” were the tournament finalist. The two teams competed in the final round against each other after knocking out all the other competitors from across the state. “One team had to win,” said Jeff Hubbard, Roaring Robotics Coach and teacher at Lakeway Christian Academy, after the final match, “and we knew it was going to be one of ours. It was a great feeling as the coach, to know our students made it this far.” Team 16859B “Vex Vuddys” earned their World Championship invite through Skill Drills, where teams can earn points by showing their robot is capable of doing different skills either autonomously or with a driver. “I found out about the High School team ‘Vex Vuddys’ on Sunday after the tournament. We already knew two of our middle school teams had invites to Worlds, then we got the call and one of our high school teams earned an invite as well. I was so excited for all these students!” Hubbard says.

The Roaring Robotics program began a short two years ago when Hubbard joined the staff at Lakeway Christian Academy. Hubbard came to teach STEM and Engineering classes and was asked if he would like to teach robotics and be the coach for the robotics teams in the Summer of 2020. Looking back to when he was offered the role, he remembers telling the school, “I would like to be the coach, and I am going to give it my all.” Hubbard has given it his all for sure, over the last two years the teams have collectively earned over 20 trophies at tournaments. This past weekend being the pinnacle of the journey so far. Hubbard attributes his passion for his teams, as a way to express the overwhelming love that Christ has for him. He shared that as a Christ follower he knows that Christ came to serve and not to be served, he looks to do the same for his students and robotics teams. Hubbard gives thanks to God for all the accomplishments of the Roaring Robotics teams, knowing that they are comprised of students who are gifted by God.

The 2022 VEX World Championship will be held in Dallas, Texas from May 3-12, 2022. This is the first in-person World Championship tournament gathering since 2019. The 2020 World Championship was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was hosted live online. The VRC Middle School competitions are May 3-5 and VRC High School competitions are May 5-7 with other VEX IQ competitions from May 8-12.

The Roaring Robotics will be at the World Championship representing Christ, their school, and their families with over 3,040 Teams and around 24,000 students. Students from the Roaring Robotics invited teams are very excited about the opportunity awarded them and they look forward to hopefully bringing back some awards. The next few weeks will be spent perfecting their robots and coding for the World Championship tournament. Students will continue to meet multiple times a week in after schools as they have all year long. They know the time and effort has paid off, and the continued time and efforts could result in a World Championship award.

This summer the award-winning state champion Roaring Robotics are hosting an elementary age camp for the public from June 13-16, 2022. You can find out more information about the camp and register your student at LakewayCamp.org. Last year’s camp filled up fast so be sure and secure a spot today!
